I heard this bird (sound file attached) in Clapham, London today 21 June 20205, and initially thought it might be a Starling.
I launched Merlin BirdID, which identified it as a Black Redstart.
I used the RSPB A-Z page to find the audio clip of its call, and played it as loud as I could on my phone. Sure enough the bird flew closer, and I could see it somewhat more clearly. It looked somewhat like a Dunnock, only darker, and its tail was splayed and had an orange hue. I could see…
